What the First Minute Tells You

Their first card is a deck list with seven cards missing. Play like you are trying to read it.

This Series

Do Not Try to Win at 2:50

You start with four cards and 5 elixir. You do not know their win condition, their building, or their small spell. Spending 6 elixir at the bridge before you know those three things is how a match becomes a coinflip that you called "mid-ladder luck." The first minute is a scout. Tower damage during it is a bonus, not the plan.

The cheapest scout is a 1-elixir card in the back: Ice Spirit or Skeletons. You see what they do, you cycle toward the card you actually want, and you have not committed a lane. Sitting at 10 elixir to "wait for them" is the other mistake. Past the cap you leak, and the player who leaks first is down before a troop is placed. If they will not play, you play the 1-elixir card. You do not play Hog into fog.

Champions make the scout longer. The ability button is not information until they press it. A Mighty Miner in the opening hand is a 4-elixir card until the ability lands. Do not rebuild your defense around a champion you have not seen activated. Count the troop, then adjust. The beginner guide covers what evolutions and heroes are. This page is about the information you can get before either of those matters.

First Card, First Read

Their first play What you now know What you do
Ice Spirit or Skeletons in the back Cycle deck. Hog, Miner, bait, or a cheap siege shell. They will see their win condition again quickly. Do not drop a 7-elixir tank. Match the cheap cycle and keep a building answer ready.
Golem, Elixir Golem, or Lava Hound in the back Beatdown. Their bar is empty. The support troop is not on the board yet. Punish the other lane immediately, then defend. Details in opposite-lane punishes.
Split Archers or split Goblins at the king They want you to pick a lane so the other half is free support. Classic bait and bridge-spam shape. Ignore the split unless it is about to hit a tower. Do not spend 3 elixir to catch 1.5 elixir of troops.
X-Bow or Mortar at the bridge Siege. The building is the win condition and it is already shooting. A mini-tank in front of the building, then a spell if a second troop is sitting on it. Ignoring it for a counterpush gives them a full lock.
Knight or Valkyrie in the back Almost nothing. Those cards are in every archetype. You have seen a mini-tank, not a deck. Cycle. Wait for the second card before you name their win condition out loud.
Nothing until they leak They are afraid of the same fog you are. They will also be down elixir when they finally play. Take the 1-elixir cycle so you do not leak with them. Let them commit first if your hand is heavy.

The Second Card Is the Deck

One card is a hint. Two cards are a shell. Ice Spirit followed by Hog Rider is a cycle deck, and you should assume Musketeer, Cannon, and a small spell until you see otherwise. Ice Spirit followed by Goblin Barrel is bait, and your Log is now a resource you track the way you track elixir. Golem followed by Night Witch is the supported push, and the Night Witch is the Fireball target, not the Golem. I write the two-card shell in my head as a sentence: "cycle Hog," "bait," "Golem Night Witch." The sentence tells me which of my eight cards I am willing to spend before double elixir.

What I refuse to conclude from the opener: their levels, their evolution, and whether they are good. A bad Golem player and a good one play the same first card. The difference shows up when you punish. The good one answers the Hog with the cheapest card that works and still has a support troop. The bad one Fireballs the Hog, leaks the rest, and drops the Golem naked into your Cannon. You only learn that by playing the punish, not by hovering.

Spell bait in the first minute is a specific trap. They play Princess at the bridge because they want The Log. If you Log her, the Goblin Barrel they are holding becomes the real attack, and you have no Log. Catch the Princess with a troop if she is not already on the tower. Save the spell for the card that deals the damage you cannot afford. That choice is the same rule as when a spell is worth it, applied before you have seen the rest of the deck. It feels risky. Logging the Princess and then watching the Barrel delete the tower is the riskier one.

A First Minute I Would Actually Play

Hand: Hog, Musketeer, Cannon, Ice Spirit. Their side is empty. I play Ice Spirit in the back, not Hog. The Spirit cycles me toward Skeletons and The Log, and it will jump something later if the match slows down.

They drop Golem behind the king. I Hog the opposite bridge immediately, because I counted the window and my Cannon is still in hand for the return trip. I do not add Musketeer behind the Hog. Musketeer stays for the Night Witch I have not seen yet. If they answer Hog with Skeletons, I take a few hundred tower damage and plant Cannon in the center as Golem crosses the river. If they ignore Hog, I still plant the Cannon. The tower damage is already banked. Spending the Cannon late, after I have celebrated the Hog hit, is the loss.

Same hand, different first card from them: Mortar at the bridge. I do not Hog the other lane and hope. Mortar locks onto my tower while I am gone. Knight is not in this hand, so Cannon goes in front of the Mortar to soak, and Ice Spirit catches whatever cheap troop they drop to protect it. Hog comes after the Mortar is distracted, not before. The first minute changed the order of the same four cards. That is the entire skill.

Questions

What if my opening hand has no cheap card?

Play the cheapest card you do have in the back, or wait until you are about to leak and then play it. Do not bridge a 4-elixir Hog just because it is the first card you saw.

Should I track all eight of their cards?

Track the win condition, the building, and the small spell. Those three decide your punishes. The other five can wait until they are on the board.

Does this change in double elixir?

The scout is mostly over by then. If you still do not know their win condition at 1:00, you spent the single-elixir minute fighting instead of looking. Double elixir is for the plan you already chose.
